For the 100th birthday of Andrei Iwanowitsch Moiseenko – one of the last survivors of Buchenwald concentration camp. Film screenings, school visits, conversations. And the big celebration on May 1, 2026 in Weimar.
Andrei Iwanowitsch Moiseenko was born in Ukraine in 1926. At the age of 15, he was deported to Leipzig for forced labor – to the HASAG, Saxony's largest armaments factory. Initially put to work in production, he later moved to the spare parts warehouse. Suspected of being the leader of a group of young insurgents, he was sent to a Gestapo prison in Leipzig.
In May 1944, he was deported to Buchenwald concentration camp. After liberation in 1945, Andrei did not give up – not even when almost all of his family members died in the post-war years. Today he lives in Minsk, Belarus, self-sufficient, still rides his bicycle and meets every day and every person with curiosity – tested by suffering, but not embittered.
These photos were taken during the Germany tour 2025 in Leipzig and Weimar by the wonderful photographer Christian Rothe. Christian will exhibit a selection of these images at our events.
